Topic of the month: Saving proposals on health insurance costs in Finland

The Finnish government has submitted proposals on health insurance savings to Parliament on 17 September 2012.

According to the government’s proposal, drug reimbursement costs would be declined by lowering medicine prices as well as Kela-refunds to patients. Prices would be cut by reducing the wholesale price of medicines outside the reference price system by 5%. Aim of the revision is to achieve EUR 133 million savings of which €113 million would be directed to drug reimbursement. Revisions are to be implemented from the beginning of year 2013, reimbursement revisions from the beginning of February 2013.
